The Journal - Issue 1/2017

The latest news from important bodies such as the IMO and class societies as well as a number of regular sections that explore other aspects of shipping.

Welcome to the first issue of 2017. This year is already shaping up to be another rollercoaster following on from 2015 and 2016 which were momentous in their own way. Brexit and President Trump’s election may have been the surprise events of last year but their impact is only just beginning to make itself known.

This edition includes some interim developments on three topics from the ShipInsight Guide series. These are Environmental Technology, Power and Propulsion and Coatings and Corrosion. All three are very topical issues and we are sure that you will find the articles interesting and informative. There have been some important developments with regard to environmental regulation in the last year that look to put shipping in a situation where some expensive times are on the cards.

There is also an article looking at the likely events in the run up to the ballast water convention coming into effect this September. After the US authorities gave type approval to three systems at the end of last year, more are on the cards and shipowners it seems have discovered an ingenious way to buy more time before they need to install a treatment system.
